Old models find their way back to every builder eventually. A childhood build surfaces in a parent's attic, a flea market box yields a dusty Spitfire missing its canopy, or a relative passes along a collection with more sentiment than structural integrity. Restoration is its own satisfying corner of the hobby, equal parts archaeology and craft, and it starts with a decision that should precede any solvent: whether this model wants preservation, restoration, or rebirth.

That first assessment matters because the three paths diverge immediately. A model built by a departed relative may be worth conserving exactly as it is, dust removed and breaks reattached, imperfections and all, because the imperfections are the point. A decent old build with tired paint may deserve honest restoration to its original scheme. And a crude glue-heavy childhood assembly of a kit that is now rare may justify full teardown and rebuilding as if the kit were new. Deciding intent first prevents the common regret of stripping away something that mattered.

Cleaning comes before every other step and solves more than expected. Decades of dust and nicotine film respond to a soak in lukewarm water with mild dish soap, a soft brush for crevices, and thorough air drying. Many attic finds emerge from a simple bath looking dramatically better, and cleaning also reveals the model's true condition, showing which paint is stable, which decals are flaking, and which joints are failing. Handle everything gently until dry, since old paint and older glue can be far weaker than they look.

Disassembly and paint stripping are where restoration becomes surgery. Old tube-glue joints often separate with careful flexing or a blade worked into the seam, since the glue was frequently weak and applied to paint rather than plastic. Paint stripping has a well-tested arsenal: isopropyl alcohol for most acrylics, and for enamels the classic immersion in oven cleaner or dedicated hobby strippers, applied in a ventilated space with gloves and followed by a thorough scrub and rinse. Always test any stripper on a hidden area or a spare part first, because some formulations attack old plastic, and vintage styrene can be brittle in ways modern plastic is not.

Replacement parts and decals, once the hard limit of restoration, are now largely solved problems. Aftermarket and third-party decal printers offer sheets for decades-old kits, vacuum-formed replacement canopies exist for common subjects, and 3D printing communities produce everything from wheels to entire cowlings. Donor kits bought cheaply at swap meets supply the rest, and manufacturer customer service occasionally still surprises with spares for reissued kits. Missing detail can be scratch-built with plastic card and sprue, which is period-appropriate anyway, since that is exactly what the original builders did.

The rebuild phase is ordinary modeling with an extra layer of meaning, and a few technical cautions. Brittle vintage plastic prefers gentle sanding to aggressive scraping, old raised panel lines are worth preserving rather than sanding away in pursuit of modern fashion, and original parts that carry history, a crooked decal a child placed forty years ago, deserve a moment of thought before correction. Restorers often photograph each stage, partly for reference during reassembly and partly because the transformation itself is the story. A restored model carries two histories at once, the machine it depicts and the hands it passed through, and that double life is something no new-in-box kit can offer.
