Clear coat

A clear coat is a colorless paint layer applied over finished color coats and decals, mainly to protect the artwork underneath from handling and to even out the sheen across a model that may otherwise show glossy decal film sitting on top of a matte paint job. It is also a functional step rather than purely cosmetic, since a gloss clear coat gives a smooth, sealed surface for decals to sit on without silvering.

Clear coats generally come in gloss, satin, and matte finishes, applied at different stages for different reasons. Gloss often goes on before decals to help them settle without trapping air, then a final matte or satin coat goes on afterward to seal everything and set the overall sheen the finished model will have on a shelf, since most real-world finishes are not actually glossy.

A common mistake is applying a matte clear coat too early, before decals are fully settled and any wash or pigment work is done, which can trap unfinished work under a layer that is difficult to redo cleanly. Shaking or stirring clear coat thoroughly before use also matters, since a poorly mixed matte formula can dry patchy or uneven in sheen across a single model.
