A factory-fresh finish is the correct end state for a showroom car model, and almost nothing else. Real tanks, aircraft, ships, and trucks live outdoors, get handled by crews, burn fuel, and drive through weather. Weathering is the family of techniques that puts that history onto a model, and it is the difference between a nicely painted object and a miniature that looks photographed in the field. The learning curve is gentler than the results suggest, because most weathering is just a stack of simple steps.

Before any technique, decide on a story. Where does this machine operate, how old is it, and how hard is its life? A desert tank gathers pale dust and sun-faded paint, a naval aircraft streaks with salt and exhaust, a working truck collects mud on the lower third and polished metal where hands and boots touch daily. Reference photos of real, dirty machines are worth more than any tutorial, because weathering invented from imagination tends to drift into repetitive patterns that real grime never follows.

The foundational technique is the wash, thinned dark paint flowed into recesses and around raised detail, which builds shadow and simulates accumulated grime. An overall wash over a gloss coat, wiped back with a damp swab, ages an entire vehicle in one session. Its partner is drybrushing, in which a nearly dry brush with a lighter shade is skimmed across raised edges and textures, catching highlights the way wear catches real edges. Wash and drybrush together, dark in the recesses and light on the edges, create the basic illusion of depth and use that every further technique builds upon.

Chipping adds the next layer of realism. Paint on real machines fails at predictable places: hatch edges, footsteps, tool contact points, and panel corners. A fine brush or a torn piece of sponge dipped in dark brown-grey paint, dabbed almost dry along those wear zones, replicates chipped paint convincingly. The classic beginner error is uniform chips scattered everywhere, so keep chips clustered where hands and boots actually go, and vary their size. A subtler alternative is scuffing with a lighter shade of the base color to suggest worn but unbroken paint.

Dust and earth effects finish the ground vehicle look. Pigment powders, or even scraped artist pastels, are brushed dry onto lower surfaces, wheel wells, and running gear, then fixed with a drop of thinner or dedicated fixer. Thinned earth-tone paint flicked from a stiff brush produces spatter, and vertical streaking on hull sides comes from drawing a damp brush downward through faint dots of oil paint. Work bottom-up in intensity, heaviest at ground level and fading with height, because that is how machines actually get dirty.

The governing principle across all of it is layering and restraint. Many thin, translucent applications, each sealed mentally by stepping back and checking against references, always beat one dramatic pass. It is easy to add more weathering and painful to remove it. Start with one new technique per model rather than attempting everything at once, and let each build add a tool to the kit. Within a few projects the techniques stop being separate steps and become a vocabulary you use to tell whatever story the model needs.
