Primer is the least exciting product on a hobby bench and one of the most consequential. It is a preparatory coating applied before color, and it does three jobs at once: it helps paint grip the surface, it unifies mismatched materials under one color, and it reveals surface flaws while they are still cheap to fix. Understanding those three jobs tells you exactly when priming matters and when it can be skipped.
Adhesion is the first job. Bare styrene is smooth and slightly oily from mold-release agents, and some acrylic paints grip it poorly, leading to paint that peels off with masking tape or chips at the slightest handling. Primer is formulated to bite into the surface and give subsequent coats something to hold. This matters most when you plan to mask, because pulling tape off unprimed acrylic is a gamble. Resin and metal parts are even more demanding, and priming them is not optional if you want paint to survive.
The second job is unification. A typical build ends up as a patchwork of grey plastic, green putty, tan filler, superglued brass, and sanded areas of different sheens. Colors sprayed over that patchwork will shift subtly depending on what lies beneath, especially whites, yellows, and reds, which are notoriously translucent. One even coat of primer resets the entire model to a single uniform base so your colors behave predictably everywhere.
The third job is inspection. Primer at a uniform matte color shows every scratch, ghost seam, glue smear, and sanding mark that grey plastic hides. Experienced builders treat the first primer coat as a diagnostic pass, expecting to find flaws, fixing them with filler and sanding, and repriming those areas. Finding a seam under primer costs ten minutes. Finding it under a finished camouflage scheme costs the whole paint job.
Choosing a primer is mostly about application method and color. Rattle can primers, including automotive brands and dedicated hobby cans, are cheap and fast but demand outdoor spraying and a light touch, since heavy coats drown detail. Airbrush primers give the most control, and modern water-based polyurethane primers spray easily and sand well. Brushable primers exist for those without spray options and work acceptably in thin coats. On color, grey is the neutral default, white brightens subsequent colors, black creates shadow-rich starting points for modulation techniques, and red-brown suits subjects that will be weathered heavily.
Application technique is simple but strict. Clean the model first, ideally with a rinse of mild soapy water and a full drying, or at least a wipe with isopropyl alcohol to lift skin oils. Apply thin, light coats from about 20 centimeters with a can or 10 to 15 with an airbrush, building coverage over two or three passes rather than flooding the surface. Let primer cure fully, which for most types means several hours to overnight, before sanding imperfections smooth with 1000 grit and moving to color. Skipping primer occasionally works out, especially on Gundam kits molded in final colors. But every builder who skips it eventually meets the peeling paint or ghost seam that explains why the rest of us do not.
