Panel lining is the technique of darkening the recessed lines and details on a model so they read visually at scale. A real aircraft seen from thirty meters shows subtle shadowed gaps between panels, and a model without lining looks oddly smooth and toylike because those shadows are missing. A model with good lining gains instant depth and mechanical credibility. It is among the highest-impact techniques per minute of effort in the entire hobby.

The most common method is the pin wash with enamel or oil-based products. The model first gets a gloss or semigloss clear coat, because wash liquid flows cleanly along smooth surfaces and drags or stains on matte ones. You then touch a fine brush loaded with thinned dark paint to a recessed line, and capillary action pulls the liquid along the groove by itself. Commercial panel line accent colors come premixed at the right consistency and have made this step nearly foolproof. After the wash dries for twenty or thirty minutes, excess is wiped away with a cotton swab barely dampened with enamel thinner, stroking in the direction of airflow or gravity so any faint residue looks like natural streaking.

Color choice matters more than beginners expect. Pure black lining on anything but very dark paint looks harsh and cartoonish. The reliable rule is to line with a darker shade of the surface color: dark grey on light grey aircraft, brown on desert tan armor, dark green on olive drab. Black is reserved for engine areas, gun blast zones, and dark blue or black base colors. Many builders keep two or three wash tones on hand and switch as the underlying color changes across the model.

Gundam builders and painters of snap-fit kits often use a different toolset, since washes with strong solvents can crack bare unpainted plastic under stress. Fine-tipped panel lining markers draw directly into the grooves and wipe clean with an eraser or alcohol swab. Pour-type marker bottles with brush tips flow like a traditional wash. For bare plastic, water-based or alcohol-based products are the safe choice, and any enamel wash on an unpainted kit should be tested on scrap sprue first, because solvent-induced cracking of stressed joints is a well-known heartbreak.

Restraint separates convincing lining from heavy-handed lining. Not every engraved line on the kit deserves emphasis, and real vehicles show their strongest shadows around control surfaces, access hatches, and moving joints rather than uniformly everywhere. Varying the intensity, wiping some areas nearly clean while leaving others darker, produces a more realistic result than uniform dark lines across the whole surface. Under-doing it slightly always looks better than overdoing it.

When mistakes happen, they are rarely fatal. Fresh enamel wash wipes off gloss coats almost completely with clean thinner, which is exactly why the gloss coat matters. Stubborn stains usually mean the surface was too matte or the wash sat too long, and a careful scrub with thinner on a swab, followed by touch-up of the base coat if needed, recovers the area. Once the lining looks right, seal it with the final varnish coat, and enjoy the transformation. Few techniques change a model this much for the cost of an evening and a small bottle of thinned paint.
